Renold Couplings to launch new product ranges at Drives & Controls Exhibition

Renold Couplings has announced it will launch two new product ranges at the Drives & Controls exhibition, being held at Birmingham’s NEC this April. Designed for industrial applications, the Hi-Tec RBI range takes the existing RB offering to the next level, by incorporating a new block profile to increase torque throughput by 50%. As with the existing industrial RB range, the new Hi-Tec RBI will be available ‘off the shelf’. The new Hydrastart range will come complete with Renoldflex, meaning that unlike the current range, it will be ‘drop-in’ so the drive assembly can remain in place, allowing the Hydrastart to be swapped out. With the only bespoke machining being the bores on the end of the couplings, which is not always required, lead times will be greatly reduced and in the majority of cases, the Hydrastart can be dispatched the same day, if the order is placed before 3pm. Rotary actuator and sensor can be installed in seconds

Festo, the leading supplier of automation equipment, has launched a new semi-rotary vane drive – the DRVS – with a unique new sensor solution which can be fitted in seconds. This enables machine builders and engineers to save valuable installation time and associated costs, and it provides excellent performance at an attractive price. The drive has a simple and compact lightweight design and delivers high torque ratings of up to 20Nm. It is powerful even in harsh environments and has an infinitely adjustable swivel angle which means that it gives increased flexibility to the user for up to 90, 180 or 270°. When combined with the unique SRBS sensor detecting the rotation is made easy. The SRBS is a closed and encapsulated unit that can be quickly assembled and screwed into place, which means it is exceptionally easy to install. Switching points can also be taught electronically by simply pressing a button. As such it provides innovative sensing without the need for mechanical adjustment and manually searching for switching points, thus reducing set-up time. Sensing is performed magnetically and without contact, and as a result, offers a long service life and reliable operation. NORD drive systems for the steel industry

Heavy loads, frequent severe shocks, extreme temperatures – reliable drive operation is challenging in a rolling mill in Bahrain. NORD provided robust and flexible solutions for steel operations engineered by SMS Meer – a world leader in heavy machinery and plant engineering.   PROJECT CHALLENGE In recent years, a large steelworks complex was erected in the Hidd industrial zone in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Its approximate annual production of 600,000 tons of steel covers one sixth of all previous beams and section imports of the entire Middle East. As part of the Hidd complex, steel industry specialists SMS Meer have designed and installed a heavy section rolling mill with state-of-the-art equipment. Rough Conditions The plant required scores of gear drives designed to handle the typical load cycles in rolling mills, most notably S5 intermittent duty, as well as S9 duty with non-periodical load, speed variations, and frequent overloads. 16-ton beams pass on roller tables through the reversing mill. The many drives installed along these tables must cope with the shock impact of alternating acceleration and deceleration of the blanks. Moreover, the roller table drives in Hidd are faced with excessively high ambient temperatures due to the climate of the Gulf state. Standard systems preferred SMS Meer also needed other resilient and powerful drive solutions for additional machinery. These include a straightener with double supported rollers that rely on hydraulic adjustments. The engineering company was determined to keep the need for special drive solutions to a minimum, and therefore required a comprehensive portfolio of units they could use in as many cases possible.
