Schaeffler launches online rolling bearing calculation software for electric motors and generators

Precision bearing manufacturer Schaeffler (UK) Ltd has released an online rolling bearing calculation module for electric motors and generators. The software enables users to quickly and easily select suitable rolling bearings for motors and generators based on their typical mechanical loads and electromagnetic field loads. BEARINX-online Easy EMachine is available online and can be used free of charge. Initial registration is simple and the user can begin calculation work immediately. The module allows calculations to be performed on electric motors and generators with horizontal, vertical or freely selectable orientation. Users can quickly browse and compare a range of different bearing support variants. The weight of the shaft, laminated cores and windings, as well as magnetic tension and other freely configurable loads are available for users to select. This allows belt pulleys, gears and shaft imbalances to be modeled at various speeds and under different load cases. The software guides the user through each step of the calculation process. The data that has been entered is shown visually on screen for the user to check. Finally, the bearings (critical to the optimum performance of the electric motor) can be calculated and selected from a wide variety of variants. INA and FAG rolling bearing data can be easily uploaded from the integrated database. Saved files can be exchanged with Schaeffler’s Engineering Service or with a local Schaeffler Technology Centre for final checking. Grease: How to avoid economic meltdown

A tub of grease costs next to nothing. A seized motor can bring a production line to a standstill, resulting in enormous accumulating losses. Magda Bartosova, Technical Advisor of Wellingborough-based motor specialist Rotor UK, says that remembering to lubricate electric motors will probably get the company accountant whining about trickle-spending, but… Electric motors are wonderful. They are highly efficient and so robust that they run and run and run. But they often drive critical processes, so a motor breakdown can be a very big issue. A good plant engineer will therefore want to make sure his motors get enough TLC to ensure a long, trouble-free working life. Modern motors are almost exclusively lubricated with grease, which is what this discussion will focus on. However, some older motors use oil-bearing felt and their maintenance programmes will need to be adapted accordingly. Grease can look messy and even harbour particles of dirt and debris, so the layman can be tempted to ‘clear it out and clean it up’. But, in fact, grease serves several functions including trapping dirt and debris so that it does not make its way into the interior of the motor and cause damage. Grease also reduces friction between moving parts, typically the components within the ball or roller bearings supporting the motor shaft. Perhaps less obviously, grease also serves the key purposes of transferring heat away from hot spots to help the motor run cool, and to reduce/eliminate corrosion of the metal surfaces. New large size, high performance tapered roller bearings reduce frictional torque by up to 50%

Precision bearing manufacturer Schaeffler has extended its range of high performance, premium quality, X-life tapered roller bearings. The new X-life FAG tapered roller bearings are now available in sizes up to 635mm outside diameter (OD). This means that Schaeffler can now offer customers the widest range of high performance tapered roller bearings on the market today. FAG tapered roller bearings in X-life quality can achieve a reduction in frictional torque of up to 50% compared to conventional tapered roller bearings. The dynamic load rating (load carrying capacity) of the X-life bearing has increased by 20%, with a resulting minimum 70% improvement in the basic nominal operating life of the bearing. As well as improving the performance and energy efficiency of the bearing, X-life tapered roller bearings also provide additional benefits in terms of a reduced design envelope, weight and friction. Design engineers can now potentially replace a standard tapered roller bearing with a smaller X-life version, therefore downsizing the system and related components. Alternatively, a standard tapered roller bearing can be replaced with an equivalent sized X-life tapered roller bearing, which will provide improved performance and energy efficiencies. X-life tapered roller bearings also contribute significantly towards reducing operating, servicing and maintenance costs, particularly with regard to the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
