Synchronous reluctance IE6 motors for industrial energy efficiency

ABB has expanded its portfolio of synchronous reluctance (SynRM) IE6 Hyper-Efficiency motors, introducing a new power range from 110 to 450 kW in frame sizes 280 and 315, with speeds up to 3600 rpm. The magnet-free technology aims to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in industrial systems, supporting the transition toward more efficient and lower-emission processes.

Energy efficiency and return on investment
According to ABB, switching to SynRM IE6 motors can deliver an overall improvement of up to 76% in terms of energy savings, return on investment (ROI), and CO₂ reduction compared to IE5 solutions. Over a typical 20-year lifecycle, estimated savings can reach approximately €51,200 and around 92,200 kg of CO₂ reduction, with an ROI of about eight months.

These results align with the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook 2025, which identifies energy efficiency as one of the fastest and most cost-effective levers for improving industrial productivity and accelerating decarbonization.

Magnet-free SynRM technology and sustainability
SynRM IE6 motors use technology without permanent magnets or rare earth metals, helping reduce environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle. Designed with circularity in mind, the motors are up to 98% recyclable and are part of the ABB EcoSolutions™ portfolio, featuring fully verified environmental product declarations according to ISO 14025 Type III.

This transparency enables industrial operators to make more informed decisions regarding environmental performance and sustainability.

Compatibility and integration in industrial applications
SynRM IE6 motors maintain the same dimensions as standard induction motors, enabling straightforward replacement in existing applications such as pumps, fans, compressors, and material handling systems. When combined with ABB variable speed drives (VSD), they enable precise process control, reduce energy consumption, and improve operational efficiency.

Toward higher energy efficiency standards
The expansion of the range follows ABB’s introduction in 2024 of the world’s first magnet-free SynRM IE6 motor for special applications, anticipating the emerging IE6 Hyper-Efficiency standard. With this development, ABB aims to make next-generation energy efficiency accessible to a wider range of industrial applications while reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
