Radial Piston Motor Delivers Ultra-High Torque

Danfoss Power Solutions has introduced the Vickers by Danfoss ICMB Industrial Cam Lobe Motor, a radial piston hydraulic motor engineered for high-torque industrial applications. The motor targets sectors including pulp and paper, primary metals, mining, marine and forestry, where compact dimensions, dynamic response and durability are critical.

Torque Output and Dynamic Performance
The ICMB motor is designed to deliver full output torque from zero speed, supporting applications that require controlled startup under load. The displacement range spans from 15,100 to 52,800 cc/rev, with torque ratings between 240 and 840 Nm/bar and rated speeds from 21 to 94 rpm, depending on configuration.

High torque density is combined with low moment of inertia, enabling rapid dynamic response. Reduced inertia limits pressure shock during sudden load changes or emergency stops, contributing to system stability and reducing mechanical stress on drivetrain components. The design supports improved control accuracy and lower energy consumption, particularly during startup and shutdown cycles.

Efficiency and Thermal Management
Overall motor efficiency can reach 95% or higher, depending on operating conditions. High efficiency reduces hydraulic power losses and lowers heat generation, which in turn extends component life and reduces cooling requirements. Lower thermal stress contributes to reduced maintenance frequency and operating cost over the motor lifecycle.

Compact Design and Installation Flexibility
The ICMB features a compact housing optimized for space-constrained installations. Multiple mounting configurations are available to support diverse integration requirements.

The motor can be supplied with a hollow shaft for mounting via shrink disc coupling, or with a splined internal bore for direct mounting on a splined shaft. A through hole option further increases flexibility. Installation methods include torque-arm or flange mounting. Torque-arm mounting eliminates the need for additional couplings, flanges or bedplates and reduces alignment requirements by removing the need for alignment bearings.

These options simplify mechanical integration in heavy industrial equipment and reduce system complexity.

Application Scope and Platform Expansion
The ICMB motor is intended for rotary drive applications such as winches, drills, conveyors, bucket wheel reclaimers, crushers, shredders, feeders/breakers, kiln drives and pinch feed rollers.

Four motor frame sizes currently cover the available displacement range, with a fifth frame size under development to extend performance coverage further. By combining high torque output, low inertia and high efficiency within a compact package, the ICMB platform addresses demanding continuous-duty industrial drive applications requiring robust hydraulic performance.
