Danfoss Expands iC7-Automation VFD Power & Integration Capabilities

Danfoss has introduced a set of functional upgrades to its iC7-Automation variable frequency drive (VFD), expanding its applicability in complex industrial automation systems, particularly in high-power and safety-critical environments.

A key technical update is the expanded voltage and power range. Low-harmonic and regenerative Active Front End (AFE) and inverter system modules (Frames 10 and 11) are now available in voltage class 07 (525–690 V AC), covering 250–4500 kW. This enables deployment of the iC7-Automation platform in larger electrical infrastructures and high-power applications without changing drive architecture.

To reduce downtime and simplify maintenance, the drive now includes a microSD card slot for backup and restore of parameters. This allows rapid replacement of units and faster recovery after service interventions.

The drive also adds embedded logic functionality via the MyDrive® Insight software. Users can implement multi-state automation logic directly in the drive, reducing dependence on external PLCs for certain control tasks and increasing system flexibility.

Connectivity has been extended with factory-installed fieldbus protocols, including EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, PROFINET RT, and EtherNet/IP. These can be activated by license without hardware retrofits, and OPC UA can be added for higher-level data integration.

From a safety perspective, the +BEF2 option now enables PROFIsafe and Safe Stop 1 (SS1-t) across all power sizes, allowing certified functional safety implementation throughout a machine range. For enclosed drives, a new +ILSS emergency stop cabinet option provides a locally integrated emergency stop, simplifying installation and improving operator safety.

The iC7-Automation VFD has also been integrated into Danfoss FlexConcept™ for food and beverage conveyor systems, positioning it as a standardized drive platform aimed at reducing system complexity and lifecycle cost.

Together, these updates extend the iC7-Automation VFD from mid-range automation into higher-power, safety-integrated, and digitally connected industrial applications while maintaining a single drive platform.
