Gearbox Series Targets High-Load Shredder Applications

Bosch Rexroth has extended its HYDROTRAC GMR 3000 gearbox series with a design optimized for recycling applications, including a new compact configuration for double-shaft shredders. The gearboxes are engineered for continuous operation under variable loads, addressing the mechanical demands of material processing in recycling plants.

Designed for high-load and variable operating conditions
Shredders in recycling facilities process heterogeneous materials and operate under fluctuating load conditions, including frequent load peaks and potential blockages. The HYDROTRAC GMR 3000 series is developed to handle these conditions while maintaining operational reliability in environments characterized by dust exposure and continuous operation.

The gearboxes support both hydrostatic and electric drive systems, enabling integration into a wide range of shredder configurations. With output torque requirements ranging from 60 to 450 kNm, the series covers multiple machine sizes and performance classes.

Flexible integration and drive compatibility
All gearbox variants offer configurable output options, including ring gear and shaft outputs, allowing adaptation to different mechanical layouts. Compatibility with the manufacturer’s motor portfolio enables system-level integration for both hydraulic and electric drives.

Overload protection is implemented through coordinated system design. In hydrostatic systems, this is achieved via valve technology combined with the hydraulic motor. For electrically driven systems, an optional overload module uses a clutch mechanism controlled by an electronic controller to detect and respond to blockage conditions, reducing the risk of mechanical damage.

Compact solution for double-shaft shredders
A newly introduced double-tower gearbox configuration addresses the requirements of dual-shaft shredders. This design delivers high power density within standard axis distances, enabling compact machine layouts without compromising torque performance.

The system supports torque ranges from 110 to 330 kNm and can optionally include shaft synchronization. This is relevant for applications where coordinated motion between two shredder shafts is required to ensure consistent material processing and prevent mechanical imbalance.

Application in recycling and mobile equipment
The gearbox series is intended for both stationary and mobile recycling systems, including shredders and crushers. For mobile applications, complementary travel drive solutions are available to support tracked undercarriage systems.

Typical use cases include processing of mixed waste streams, industrial scrap, and bulky materials, where robust drivetrain components are essential for maintaining throughput and minimizing downtime.

Presentation in industrial recycling context
The expanded gearbox portfolio will be presented at IFAT (4-7 May), where solutions for waste management and recycling technologies are showcased. The development reflects ongoing demand for durable, high-torque drivetrain components capable of supporting continuous and energy-intensive recycling operations.
